D. E. Shaw Research (DESRES) welcomes summer internship applications from undergraduate and graduate students from a range of technical disciplines. Interns spend 12-15 weeks at DESRES working closely with members of our hardware, software, or chemistry teams on a substantial engineering or research project. They are fully immersed in our research environment, functioning in a similar capacity to our full-time staff.
Interns have the option of participating in intensive technical workshops led by members of our technical team, as well as by distinguished visiting scientists. These workshops offer valuable exposure to computational drug discovery, the analysis and visualization of large scientific data sets, high-performance computing, and other technical topics with broad applications.
Past interns have made meaningful progress on challenging projects, some of which have resulted in new software features that are actively used by our team and publications by the group in prestigious scientific journals.
The academic backgrounds of DESRES interns reflect the interdisciplinary nature of our group. Past interns have pursued degrees in electrical or computer engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and related fields. Ideal candidates will have experience programming in Python or C/C++.
